TikTok vs Instagram Social Media Marketing Strategies
The fact that the social media app TikTok has had a big impact on the landscape of social media platforms has been undeniable, especially throughout the last year. Formerly known as Musical.ly, the video-sharing app has over 2 billion users that share different visual-based content in video form.
On the other hand, Instagram with over 1 billion active users, is known for its photo, as well as video-sharing capabilities, where its users can share visual content with the followers there.
However, in more recent months, with the increase in popularity of TikTok, Instagram has attempted to introduce some similar features to its own platform. Although both of these platforms are incredibly useful when reaching younger generations of people via social media marketing strategies, there are some key differences between the two and their user bases.
Editing Options
TikTok has plenty of templates, filters, and effects for its users to use on their videos, compared to Instagram and its latest feature called Reels. Unfortunately the editing effects for Instagram videos are far more limited, and they only allow users to select them before they filmed a video clip, unlike with TikTok. Additionally, TikTok also has a few other features that allow users to interact with each other‘s videos such as Duet and Stitch, which are not available in Instagram‘s Reels.
Advertising
Because Instagram was established far before TikTok was, it has a much more functional advertising space for businesses. However, TikTok also offers various ad options to companies, such as branded effects, challenges, ads, and more. One of the biggest advantages that Instagram has in this aspect, is that it’s owned by one of the biggest tech conglomerates around the world, Facebook, and has not been facing the same barriers that TikTok has in the past.
This is because from the very beginning, TikTok has faced plenty of public scrutiny and issues with various countries banning the app itself due to some privacy and safety concerns.
Algorithm
One of the biggest advantages that TikTok has over any other social media platform is the efficient and engaging algorithm, that has users staying on the app for long periods of time. Plenty of tech professionals have analyzed TikTok’s algorithm, trying to understand how it works and implement it onto other platforms, but no one has been successful so far. Instagram‘s Discover page is supposed to be similar to TikTok’s “For You” page, however the content on the two pages is quite different. While TikTok users can create videos and catalog them with the #ForYouPage hashtag, the same is not possible for Instagram, where the Discover page is essentially a melting pot of different types of content.
All of this to say that although both platforms are efficient for reaching and targeting younger audiences, each platform has its own rules and types of content that works best with those audiences.
