Will Seahawks’ Gordon Make the Most of This Opportunity?

Josh Gordon may be out of chances, but the Seattle Seahawks are going to give the “embattled” wide receiver one more shot if he’s cleared to play this season by the NFL. The ‘Hawks recently signed Gordon to a one-year deal, even as he’s waiting to see if the league will allow him to play. It’s an interesting move, given that Seattle is in the process of trimming its final roster to the 53-player league maximum. That seems to indicate they believe the NFL will let Gordon play… or at least they think his talent level is worth the risk.

And what’s that risk? Gordon has been suspended eight times total, either by the NFL or by his own team, in most cases for violating the league’s banned substances policies. The most recent suspension was considered “indefinite” by the NFL after Gordon once again violated the league’s drug policy. Now, Gordon is appealing the suspension, and it seems the ‘Hawks think he might win.

Gordon initially came to the Seahawks halfway through the season last year after being cut by New England. He didn’t do much on the field, as he was just learning the system, but he did make inroads with key stakeholders on the team. At the time, about the move, Gordon said:

“I think I’m fortunate in general to have landed in a place like this with coaches like this… The staff, the organization from the top down, the guys, it’s real family… real close, tight-knit. A real energetic, competitive group. They love the game of football, you can see it, and it’s a great feeling to come back to football and enjoy what you do and then be able to have fun with it…”

But, for the former All-Pro, who has shown flashes of brilliance many times in his career, this may be the final opportunity to resurrect his damaged brand. Gordon is absolutely a stellar talent who has all the tools to play at the highest level if he can keep himself together and away from the drugs.

It’s a tough task, but if he can do it, Gordon has the opportunity to attain hero status in the world of sports. Fans love a comeback story, and he could be the inspiration people are looking for. Given that, while the ‘Hawks are risking some cap space and a roster spot, Gordon has a lot more on the line to play for.

Fortunately for the receiver, he’s got “family” in the locker room betting on him, supporting him, and working to lift him up. Now, he just needs to keep his test clean, put in the work on the field that he’s already shown he’s more than capable of. Do that, and the story – and brand trajectory – of Josh Gordon is just beginning.
